Mill Lane Shaft (Bradford)

Project: Mill Lane Shaft
Client: Yorkshire Water

The project: Yorkshire Water continues to invest heavily in its assets but the company was struggling to stem water flooding a newly constructed 27m deep shaft. APA Concrete Repairs Ltd has extensive in-house water-stop expertise and this was called upon by the engineers Mowlem Johnstone to resolve the issue. The leakage was entering between the joints of the segments and from below the concrete base, preventing the shaft from being capped. Previous attempts by competitors had failed to stem the 2.5 bar head of water.

The solution: Using specialist materials from De Neef in Belgium, a rapid setting plug material was used initially, followed by the selective injection of a polyurethane resin with WRAC approval. This fully sealed the shaft and stopped the leakage.
